Nostalgia Strikes!

There are few games that managed to stand the test of time. Being played to this day while having been made in the last century is no small feat but the mark of a true game that transcends technology limitations. A true game is based on pure game mechanics and is not dependent on graphical bling bling.

Remember Murphy

Supaplex was launched in 1991 and although it was not a completely original concept it turned out to be a very popular puzzler. The original game had 111 levels but the community created even more.

Supaplex

In essence, the player controls Murphy, an antropomorphized red ball (similar to Pac Man) through intricate levels full of Zonks, Snik Snaks and other dangers. The purpose of every level is to collect a set number of Infotrons and then reach the Exit in order to succeed. Infotrons are scattered about a level and depending on the level, their quantity varies between more than you need to exactly that much.

The game play consists of collecting enough Infotrons without getting trapped, squashed or otherwise blown up by the different hazards that inhabit each level (including the infotrons themselves). The most prevalent elements in a level are Bases and Zonks. Bases are a sort of fodder that Murphy devours upon passing but they also act as platforms for the Zonks. Once a Zonk finds itself suspended in mid air, it falls down to the nearest platform. If instead of a platform, that said Zonk lands on top of Murphy, then Murphy goes boom. It was not uncommon to re-start a level multiple times until you would figure out a solution. Fortunately, the wonders of modern gaming introduced the save concept. In this port you get on save slot that you can use multiple times, but it gets emptied if you leave the game.

Supaplex was adapted for the Android system with all of its qualities. Even though controlling Murphy is a bit harder, you have four control schemes, including one that uses an external keyboard. You also get to choose if you want to see the old graphics or the updated crispier design. Personally, I prefer the old pixelated look. It has more charm and Murphy looks way more cute.

Supaplex

The levels are fairly varied in design and difficulty. Some are short and require some precise manoeuvres while others are large and allow multiple solution paths. Although Zonks are the main obstacles and adversaries, Snik Snaks will make their appearance fairly early in the game. These are mobile scissors that terminate Murphy on contact. They have semi predictable movement patterns are really dangerous. Electrons will also appear on levels and although they are static and much easier to avoid in theory, their location is not always obvious as they follow a active (visible) / inactive (invisible) pattern and you can find yourself passing over one right while it becomes active.

Conclusion

There's not much else to say about Supaplex except that it's a quality game from the past that can easily stand on it's own in the Play Store. As it is totally free to play, you can't find a better deal!
